This programme traces the journey from Advent to Christmas in the Church’s calendar. Bach and Buxtehude guide us through the four Sundays of Advent, following themes of fall and redemption, the prophecy of John the Baptist, the anticipation of the coming of The Saviour, and Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Three chorale preludes (BWV 605, 604, 606) mark the transition into the Christmas season before the final group of three pieces herald the coming of The Saviour with suitable jubilation. – ‘Alpha es et O!’
